So on many vacation there is one day that has stars around it. Going to Vitra was that for me. First I got to see one of Zaha Hadid's buildings and walk around and photograph it! My first Hadid building! When you see her work, you know her genius. Second we took public transportation back to Basel, another one of my favorite things to do when I travel.
The Vitra site was designed in the late 1950 by some of the world's most distinguished architects. I make it a point to search out unusual modern architecture where ever we visit, and many of them have a building at Vitra. Included in the list are Ando (whose work I had seen in Japan), and Gehry (whose work we had seen in Berlin and Sydney). Architects' works we had not knowingly seen before, Grimshaw and Siza. There was also a structure by Buckminster Fuller. Fuller taught at Southern Illinois University during the time Hugh and I attended there. I actually took a class with him in my first semester in Carbondale.
The Museum is actually in Germany not Switzerland. Why? The man who built this was Swiss but his wife's family was German and this had been their land.
Here are some of my favorite photos of the various buildings at Vitra.
