We tend to travel by mass transit where ever we go, as we feel we get closer to the locals. Sometimes this is a wonderful experience and sometimes I feel like I need a shower afterwards.
But I am always amazed by how clean EVERYTHING is in Japan. In 2016 when we visited and spent a month, I remarked to one guide about the cleanliness of the train. She looked very confused and said, “they are all that way”. Clearly she hadn’t experienced anything different than immaculate trains.
Here everything is neat and clean. You see shop keepers sweeping the sidewalk in front of their shops in the early morning hours.
Yesterday I saw someone cleaning on top of lockers in a major train station.

Remarkable. Wish he would come clean above my cabinets!
